France has repatriated several young children from camps in northeastern Syria, its foreign ministry said on Friday.

The ministry said the children, aged five or under, were either orphans of separated from their parents in the camp.

In a statement, the ministry said the Western-backed Syrian Democratic Forces made the handover possible, without elaborating further. The SDF is working to defeat the Islamic State group in its last bastion in Syria.

'These children have been through a lot,' France 24's James André reports

The children will get medical and psychological treatment, the foreign ministry said, while stressing that French adults who fought with IS group should be prosecuted in the country where they committed crimes.
