France reopens borders to Brits with a negative Covid test result from tomorrow

In a fresh wave of hope for British holidaymakers, France has announced that it will welcome back UK travellers from tomorrow (March 12).

The country's tourism minister, Jean-Baptiste Lemoyne, announced on Twitter that travel restrictions would be eased for anyone arriving from/going to the UK in France, with the decree due to be published on Friday.

Other restrictions will remain in place such as needing to show a negative PCR Covid-19 test result taken within 72 hours of travel.

Currently, arrivals are also required to self-isolate for seven days upon arrival, before taking another PCR test. (You can find out more in the Foreign Office's France advice ).

Until now, the country had closed its borders to Brits except for essential reasons such as travelling for work, or for French residents in the UK returning to France.

Mr Lemoyne added that the country was able to relax rules for travelling to/from the UK because the Kent variant now circulates in France. Restrictions will also be eased for travellers from other non-EU destinations including New Zealand, Japan, Singapore, Australia, South Korea and Israel.

He urged people to avoid unnecessary travel during the pandemic.

The news comes after Cyprus and Greece both recently announced plans to welcome back British tourists from May.

Cyprus has said it will welcome back vaccinated Brits with no restrictions, while Greece will welcome back tourists from May if they have had the Covid-19 vaccine, have antibodies or could show proof of a negative Covid-19 test taken before travel.

At the moment it's illegal for Brits to travel abroad on holiday. However, when Boris Johnson announced the roadmap for easing England out of lockdown, he revealed that foreign travel could resume from May 17, subject to a review by the government's Global Travel Taskforce in April.
