France players issue plea to referee over Liverpool defender Neco Williams

France players issued a plea to the officials not to send off Liverpool defender Neco Williams during an incident-packed evening in Nice.

Williams was shown the red card for Wales just 25 minutes into Wednesday's friendly against the world champions after a lengthy VAR check deemed he had handled a goalbound effort from Karim Benzema.

Although Benzema's penalty was saved by former Liverpool goalkeeper Danny Ward, France eventually cruised to a 3-0 triumph.

And France captain Hugo Lloris later revealed the home players had urged Portuguese referee Luis Godinho not to dismiss Williams.

"We all asked the referee not to send the Welsh player off," said the Tottenham man.

"We wanted the match to finish as 11 vs 11."

While Williams will still be available for Wales' opening Euro 2020 match against Switzerland on June 12, the Liverpool right-back is banned from Saturday's final warm-up game against Albania.

And interim manager Robert Page has revealed Wales will appeal the decision to dismiss the 20-year-old.

"I thought it was harsh to give a penalty in the first place but to send him off was a bitter blow," said Page.

"We'll have a look at it (appealing). That's the disappointing thing, the plan was to play him for so many minutes tonight and then building up to Saturday, and we can't do that now."
