France lurches closer to quarantine list as coronavirus cases jump to post-lockdown high

France looks even closer to being taken off the UK's list of quarantine-free travel corridors after a record number of coronavirus cases post-lockdown.

New cases in the European country has leapt by more than 2,200 over a 24-hour period for a second day - putting the nation at levels not seen since late May.

The number of people in France infected with coronavirus on Friday rose by 2,288 on Friday, a new post-lockdown high, following increases of 1,604 on Thursday and 1,695 on Wednesday, the health ministry said in a statement.

It comes after Chancellor Rishi Sunak warned holidaymakers that the government would not hesitate in removing France from the travel list if the spike in coronavirus did not slow.

On Thursday, the UK added Belgium, Andorra and the Bahamas to the list which means anyone arriving back in the UK from those countries after 4am on Saturday must self-isolate for 14 days.

The government is also advising Brits against non-essential travel to these destinations.

Chancellor Rishi Sunak admitted it is a "tricky situation" when he was asked about Brits who are preparing to travel to France.

He told Sky News@Breakfast: "What I can say to people is we're in the midst of a global pandemic and that means there is always the risk of disruption to travel plans and people need to bear that in mind.

"It's the right thing for us to do to keep everything under review on a constant basis, talking with our scientists and medical advisers.

"And if we need to take action as you've seen overnight, we will of course not hesitate to do that and we're doing that to protect people's health.

"In the meantime people should look at the guidance and take everything into account and make a decision they think is best."

Last month Prime Minister Boris Johnson warned there are "signs of a second wave" creeping across Europe.

A Downing Street source told the Daily Mail: "The PM is extremely concerned by what he's seeing abroad and fears we could be seeing the same thing here in a fortnight.

"People have got to realise we are still in the middle of a pandemic.

"He wants to go further on opening things up and getting people back to work, but he knows it'll be his head on the block if things go wrong."
