France issues covid rule update affecting all holidaymakers ahead of summer

France health officials have issued an update that will affect all locals and holidaymakers from next week.

Following the update from the EU Aviation Safety Agency regarding face masks on flights, France have announced that from Monday May 16, face masks will no longer be mandatory on public transport.

Currently, face masks are mandatory on public transport and in all health establishments. Everyone aged six and over need to wear a face mask or you could be fined if you don’t comply with this rule.

Health Minister Olivier Véran announced that from Monday: "Wearing a mask remains recommended," but he added the rule is "no longer appropriate" due to the drop in Covid-19 cases in the country.

This means that if you fly from Glasgow Airport to Paris from next week, wearing a mask on board your flight will be optional.

The relaxation of the rule comes two years after France introduced strict covid regulations regarding face masks and from Monday it will only be compulsory to wear a face mask in medical settings such as hospitals.

This comes after the EU Aviation Safety Agency announced face masks will be optional on flights and in airports in the EU.

Patrick Ky, EASA Executive Director, said: “It is a relief to all of us that we are finally reaching a stage in the pandemic where we can start to relax the health safety measures.

“For many passengers, and also aircrew members, there is a strong desire for masks to no longer be a mandatory part of air travel. We are now at the start of that process.

“Passengers should continue to comply with the requirements of their airline and, where preventive measures are optional, make responsible decisions and respect the choice of other passengers. In particular, a passenger who is coughing and sneezing should strongly consider wearing a face mask, for the reassurance of those seated nearby.”

However, travellers are encouraged to check the covid rules for the destination they are travelling to - if they require people to wear face masks on public transport, then visitors will need to wear them on flights.
