France ends UK travel ban following month of strict limitations

France has announced it is ending its ban on UK travellers, allowing people to visit the country for holidays and leisure for the first time in four weeks.

One month ago, France stated that those from the UK would not be permitted to enter the country starting December 16 in the wake of the rapid spread of omicron.

However, on Thursday morning, the French tourism minister Jean Baptiste-Lemoyne tweeted that the restrictions would be scrapped from January 14.

More details will be released later, such as testing, self-isolation and vaccination rules, as reported by the Daily Record.

Omicron has continued to proliferate in France, and on Tuesday the country reported a record number of new daily Covid-19 cases with 368,149.

The easing of restrictions for travellers was teased by French Committee on Foreign Affairs member Alexandre Holroyd on Tuesday evening.

He tweeted: "Following numerous discussions with the Government, considerable reductions in health measures at the borders will be announced very soon.

"More details here in the coming days."

The travel industry has been preparing for the end of the ban.

On Wednesday, UK travel firm Ski Line sent an email stating: "We are expecting the French government to make an announcement this Wednesday to confirm that British vaccinated skiers can enter France from this Saturday 15 January."
