France could block UK holidaymakers amid fears over spread of Covid variant

Tougher restrictions on visitors from Britain could be imposed by France because of growing fears over the Covid-19 Indian variant.

The country is considering "slightly tougher" restrictions because of the spreading variant, French foreign affairs minister Jean-Yves Le Drian told RTL radio.

He suggested the UK could be put in a health category of its own, between the strictest measures imposed on visitors from India and 15 other countries, and more relaxed requirements for visitors from the EU and some other nations.

"We worry about the Indian variant and we remain on high alert regarding that matter, in co-operation with British authorities," the minister said.

UK visitors heading to France must show proof of a negative PCR test taken less than 72 hours before departure and fill in a health declaration form committing to self-isolate for seven days and take a second PCR test.

France is on the UK's "amber" list. Germany and Austria have also imposed stricter rules for UK visitors because of the Indian variant.

Meanwhile, Eurotunnel Le Shuttle is offering passengers Covid-19 testing starting at £57 for pre-departure and arrival.

Test kits - provided by Prenetics - can be booked through the Eurotunnel website and can either be sent to the passenger's home address, or they can visit one of the 20 UK locations to take the test in-person.

Deborah Merrens, chief commercial Officer at Eurotunnel, said: "We are delighted to be able to offer our customers a straightforward way to meet the current testing requirements.

"We know that whilst holidaymakers are desperate to get away, safety is paramount and our collaboration with Prenetics makes the testing process as stress free as possible."

Eurotunnel Le Shuttle said bookings were increasing ahead of hopes that France would be included in the green list by the main summer holiday period.
