France boss Didier Deschamps takes dig at Frank Lampard over N'Golo Kante injuries

France boss Didier Deschamps says Frank Lampard spoke to him about not selecting N'Golo Kante for Les Bleus.

However, after picking Kante in his squad to face Iceland and Turkey in their Euro 2020 qualifiers, Deschamps says he is minded to ask Lampard if the Chelsea boss can give Olivier Giroud more game-time instead.

Kante was recently absent for a month before returning in the Premier League defeat to Liverpool .

He then missed Chelsea's next two matches with a recurrence of a hamstring complaint, before completing 90 minutes in the 2-1 Champions League win at Lille on Wednesday night.

Lampard spoke of how Chelsea were treating Kante with kid gloves after the 2-0 win over Brighton last weekend, saying: "My feeling is that he has played a lot and that's because he has been so successful and so important to the teams he has been in.

"At the minute, he has injuries.

"This little niggle he had is a small, small injury. We just need to get it right. We are just careful and it is my duty to work with him. The medical team are working so hard with him."

Lampard asked Deschamps not to pick Kante at the last international break, but the World Cup winner has included the midfielder in his squad.

He has also picked Chelsea's Giroud, who hasn't started a Premier League game since the 1-1 draw at home to Leicester in August.

"Lampard had asked me not to pick Kante at the last break," Deschamps told a press conference on Thursday.

"If that's still the way I'm going to call him later to tell him it would be nice if you play Olivier Giroud a little bit!"
