France and Ireland join countries suspending travel from UK

France has become the latest country to ban travel from the UK over the new strain of coronavirus.

Italy, the Netherlands and Belgium were the first to make the move following the Prime Minister's announcement on Saturday that the new variant could be up to 70 per cent more infectious.

The French government has said that "all flows of people from the United Kingdom to France are suspended from midnight tonight, for 48 hours, and for all means of transport."

French transport minister Jean-Baptiste Djebbari tweeted the news shortly after Germany made a similar announcement.

The German embassy in London tweeted: "As of midnight tonight (Berlin time), all flights from the UK to Germany are prohibited due to the coronavirus mutation."

Ireland is also introducing a ban on travel from the UK from midnight on Sunday.

The restrictions on flights and ferries will last for an initial 48 hours before being reviewed during a cabinet meeting on Tuesday (December 22).
