Fran Kirby says 50th England cap would be extra special after ‘rollercoaster’ time on and off the pitch

Chelsea women forward Fran Kirby says it will be “really special” if she gets to make her 50th appearance for England on Tuesday night.

Kirby is one game off the milestone after recovering from a severe bout of pericarditis back in 2019.

The 28-year-old can win her 50th cap if she features against Latvia in Riga, with England looking to maintain their perfect start to World Cup qualifying after beating Northern Ireland 4-0 at Wembley on Saturday.

“Hopefully I get to play a part and get the 50th cap. It is obviously something that I am really proud of,” said Kirby.

“I have been a part of this team for a long time, so for me to get that 50th cap would be really, really special.

“It is just nice to be back and playing regularly for the team and with the team. I am really enjoying it, so I am excited for it.

“It has been a rollercoaster for sure, but it is a journey I am really proud of and one that I think, looking back, I wouldn’t change a lot. I have been through a lot but it has made me who I am.”
