Fran Kirby and Pernille Harder fire Chelsea top of WSL with victory over Man United

Fran Kirby’s second-half goal propelled Chelsea Women to the top of the Barclays FA Women’s Super League with a 2-1 victory over Manchester United.

Chelsea went ahead in the top-of-the-table clash at Kingsmeadow through Pernille Harder but United substitute Lauren James scored a stunning equaliser.

However, the visitors were only level for four minutes before Kirby put her side back in front to seal the win and extend their unbeaten league run to 31 games.

It was a competitive contest from the first whistle and Sam Kerr had several excellent chances in the opening 15 minutes.

The Australian international fired wide twice and was denied by United goalkeeper Mary Earps but Chelsea went ahead with half an hour played.

Magdalena Eriksson had a header cleared off the line, before Kirby hit the post and the ball fell to Harder who slotted home.

United’s Kirsty Hanson thought she’d scored moments later only for it to be flagged offside but Casey Stoney's side did equalise after the break when James’ curling effort sailed into the back of the net.

Soon enough Kirby restored Chelsea’s lead when Eriksson’s long ball caught out United’s defence and the England striker coolly finished.

Emma Hayes’ side sit at the top of the table, ahead of United on goal difference with a game in hand.
