Britney Spears’ boyfriend has broken his silence following a controversial new documentary about the singer.

Sam Asghari has spoken out for the first time since the US broadcast of Framing Britney Spears on Saturday (6 February).

The documentary examines the “Baby One More Time” star’s career and the #FreeBritney movement that campaigns against her ongoing conservatorship.

Those who were closest to Spears during her meteoric rise to fame and ensuing mental health breakdowns are facing a backlash for their poor treatment of the singer, with many viewers criticising her sister, Jamie Lynn, and ex-boyfriend Justin Timberlake.

Now, Asghari, 27, has spoken publicly, telling People: “I have always wanted nothing but the best for my better half and will continue to support her following her dreams and creating the future she wants and deserves."

The personal trainer continued: “I am thankful for all of the love and support she is receiving from her fans all over the world, and I am looking forward to a normal, amazing future together.”

Spears, who was placed under a conservatorship following public breakdowns in 2008, has been dating Asghari since 2016.

The documentary, which has been branded “heartbreaking” by viewers, explores the pop star’s ongoing battle with her father, Jamie Spears, over the control that the conservatorship gives him over every aspect of her life, from her business decisions to her family.
