Fractured eye socket: three cops hurt after Maitland foot chase, arrest

TWO people will face court in Newcastle on Monday after allegedly attacking police.

A police officer has suffered a fractured eye socket and two others were allegedly assaulted in a vehicle stop at Maitland on Sunday evening while a woman is accused of assaulting police at Wamberal when they tried to take her to hospital for mandatory drug testing following a crash early on Saturday.

Port Stephens-Hunter police stopped a silver Ford hatchback in Trevor Street at Telarah about 8.40pm after the vehicle was allegedly observed driving in a dangerous manner.

Police will allege a man left the hatchback and walked towards one of the officers, a sergeant, in an attempt to block his vision of the car.

The sergeant saw another man exist the driver's side before he "began acting erratically and allegedly pushed the officer in the chest"

Officers attempted to arrest the driver when the second man allegedly got between them.

"The driver then allegedly punched the officer to the left side of his face, impacting with his eye," police said in a statement.

Both men fled the scene on foot.

The sergeant was taken to John Hunter Hospital for treatment for a fractured eye socket.

A short time later police spotted the driver trying to jump a fence onto the nearby rail corridor. Two officers attempted to restrain him when the man allegedly punched a constable in the neck and shoulder multiple times.

He made it over the fence pursued by a senior constable who was also allegedly punched before he was able to restrain and arrest the man, 20.

The 20-year-old was taken to Maitland police station and charged with driving without a licence, drive vehicle under influence of alcohol, assault police officer in execution of duty cause actual bodily harm, escape police custody, two counts of resist officer in execution of duty, and two counts of assault police officer in execution of duty without actual bodily harm

The Curlewis man was refused bail to face Maitland Local Court on Monday.

The female occupants of the hatchback were helping police with inquiries while the second man is yet to be found.

Police said the constbale and senior constabler received treatment for minor injuries and the three officers had been discharged from hospital.

Separately, a woman will face court after police were called to a crash on Ocean View Drive about 7am on Saturday morning.

Officers who were attending a nearby break and enter went to the scene after a Holden Astra hit the rear of a parked car.

The driver, a 22-year-old woman, was breath tested and returned a negative result.

Police arrested her and told her she would be taken to Gosford Hospital for mandatory drug testing when she allegedly violently struggled with officers as they attempted to handcuff her.

Additional police were called in to restrain the woman, who was taken to hospital in a police vehicle.

A leading senior constable received hospital treatment for a knee and elbow injury following the incident.

The 22-year-old was charged with assault police, resist police, and negligent driving.

She was refused bail to face Newcastle Local Court.
