Fr Niall Molloy: RTE viewers hail 'gripping' documentary as grim tale of tragic priest begins

RTE viewers have rushed to praise the documentary on Fr Niall Molloy which aired on Monday night as the 'gripping' episode began the 'grim' tale of the tragic priest.

The two-part documentary will take a look at the mysterious circumstances surrounding the death of Fr Molloy at the home of his friends Richard and Teresa Flynn in Offaly in July 1985.

The priest’s battered body was discovered in the master bedroom of his now deceased friends home, Kilcoursey House a 23-room manor.

Initially, it was believed that Fr Molloy died of a heart attack after a fight broke out between him and Richard Flynn.

But as viewers who tuned in last night found out, that was not the case.

One user tweeted: "Ordinary people left broken. Cover ups. Wealth. Power. Secrecy. Ireland in the 80’s really was grim and this documentary encapsulates it perfectly. This is the type of programming RTE do so well."

Another agreed, adding: "First part of documentary on killing of #FrNiallMolloy absolutely gripping. Judge Roe’s direction to jury to acquit remains mystifying and deeply troubling. Disturbing that the questions raised by journalists in the late-80s remain unanswered."

While others urged that justice must be found for the family of the deceased priest.

"Excellent programme which highlights the many questions that remain unanswered - the family deserves much better even at this unacceptable remove" said one man.

Another added: "Tremendous respect for the family of #FrNiallMolloy who have campaigned for justice for so long, leading the charge for many years now. We need answers. We need the truth to be told."

Richard Flynn admitted to punching the priest a number of times in the early hours of the morning as they argued about who would go downstairs to get more drinks.

Gardai said the business man was calm and collected when he was first interviewed at 4.45am that day.
