Foyle Cup youth football tournament is cancelled

This year's Foyle Cup youth football tournament has been cancelled.

Organisers confirmed on Friday that the competition would not take place this summer due to the coronavirus crisis.

The 2020 Foyle Cup was due to take place from July 20-25.

The hugely popular tournament - which is held in Derry, Strabane, Limavady, Dungiven and Coleraine - attracts teams from all over the world.

This year teams were due to travel from the USA, Canada, Germany, France, Finland, China, England and Scotland.

“We have been closely monitoring the implications for our annual event over the course of recent months, and with restrictions on mass gatherings and social distancing, sporting events and wider travel arrangements likely to remain in place for the foreseeable future, understandably the tournament cannot take place this year," the organisers said in a statement.

"Our number one priority is that everyone stays safe from the potentially devastating effects of COVID-19."

The cancellation follows news earlier today that this year's SuperCupNI has also been called off.

That tournament was scheduled to kick-off in August.
