FOX’s Joel Klatt ranks the top five helmets in college football

Debating the best-looking college football helmet in the game can get awfully heated, but that hasn’t stopped endless writers, media members, and fans from weighing in on the topic almost monthly it seems.

FOX’s Joel Klatt is the latest, and you won’t like where this is going. He ranked his top five helmets in college football and had some interesting takes, none of which included the iconic silver helmet with buckeye leaves affixed that Ohio State dons every year.

Instead, Klatt’s top five consisted of, in order — Colorado, Texas, Notre Dame, Michigan, and Alabama.

We have some serious beef with all of this (yeah we’re biased). First of all Joel, we know you played for the Buffaloes, but c’mon, their helmet is nowhere near aesthetically pleasing nor an iconic brand. That’s just blatant homerism at its best. All that design consists of is taking the standard college logo and slapping the initials in the middle of it. Bland.

The others Klatt singles out would make the team picture of almost anyone that has a sense of tradition and reverence for the sport. But if you’re going to put in the plain lids of Notre Dame and Alabama, you could at least give Ohio State’s helmet a nod, especially when those buckeye leaves begin to set it apart.

To be fair, Klatt did identify the Buckeye helmet as an honorable mention, but we have an issue with that too.

Penn State? Really? That salad ensemble looks like someone was up against the gun and had to come up with a helmet design as the players were running out on the field.
