Fox News presenter Lisa Montgomery is unrepentant about having called golfer Rory McIlroy “a leprechaun”.
In an item about McIlroy’s ankle injury on Monday, she was heard to say: “I can’t stand him – he’s a leprechaun”.
After complaints, not least from people of Irish background across the States, Montgomery decided to “clarify” her remark. Rather than apologise, she defended what she had said:
“I love sports, I love golf, but I am not a fan of Rory’s. Mostly for the way he treated tennis great Caroline Wozniacki and discarded her like a piece of chewed gum when he broke her heart and broke off their engagement in a short phone conversation.
That’s worse than breaking up on a Post-it... I called Rory McIlroy a leprechaun and, believe me, I wanted to call him much worse.
As you know, some of my best friends are leprachauns, and they also have tremendous senses of humour. Thank you”.
Montgomery, a libertarian satirist, often uses the (Irish) stage name Kennedy, hosts a show under the Kennedy title and has written a book called the Kennedy Chronicles.
