CINCINNATI _ One of the things Bud Norris repeated, a few times, late Monday night after allowing the runs that lost the game and botched Daniel Poncedeleon's winning debut was that he wanted to "get back out there tomorrow."
He got his wish.
It just took awhile for the Cardinals to make it happen.
A two-run lead nursed into the seventh inning by rookie Austin Gomber's six no-hit innings vanished in the blink of a swing. The game remained tied, 2-2, until the 11th when Dexter Fowler, from the right side, lofted an opposite-field home run to put the Cardinals ahead, 4-2. That was the lead Norris inherited as he went for his 19th save.
He got through two Reds All-Stars, Joey Votto and Eugenio Suarez, to secure the save and the win. The winning run was at the plate and provided the final out of the game.
Fowler's home run was his second of the season from the right side of the plate and his eighth of the season overall.
Gomber carried his no-hitter one out into the seventh inning. He lost it there on a single by Votto, and he lost the lead on the next batter. Suarez homered to score Votto and knot the game, 2-2.
A day after Poncedeleon carried a no-hitter through all seven of his innings, Gomber got through 61/3 no-hit innings before Votto. Suarez broke up the Cardinals' shutout bid in the eighth inning Monday, and was there again in the seventh to break Gomber's shutout. It marked the second time in as many games that the Reds have rallied in the seventh inning or later to erase a Cardinals' lead.
Gomber had a hit before he allowed a hit in his first major-league start. He singled in the seventh inning shortly after Yairo Munoz's double gave the Cardinals a 2-0 lead.
