For just the sixth time ever, WA has recorded snowfall four or more times in a calendar year.

A light snow fell on Bluff Knoll, the highest peak in southern WA at 1099m, this morning with more than 20 hikers climbing the mountain at dawn to catch the sight.

It was the fourth recorded snow flurry at the Stirling Range, about 100km north-east of Albany, this year.

A cold pool of air behind a cold front brought freezing conditions to much of southern WA with hail and frost forecast today and tomorrow.

The most snowfalls ever recorded in a calender year in WA were six in 2016.

Snow has been recorded on four occasions three times and five occasions just once.

This year's snowfalls were recorded in May, July, August and September.

This morning, a group of hikers carried a barbecue to the summit and cooked sausages for other climbers.

Early start worth the effort: Climbers

Michael Deleckie drove from Perth overnight to climb the peak  this morning.

"It was a tough climb, especially half way through but worth it when I got to the top and it was snowing," he said.

Mt Barker's Harry Rout summited the peak earlier this year and saw snow.

"There's definitely more snow than last time. Once we hit the top at sunrise and it started snowing, I reckon about 2cm," he said.

A Bureau of Meteorology snow file lists the earliest snowfall ever recorded in WA was April 20, 1970 and the latest was November 19, 1992.

WA averages 1.7 snowfalls each year, mostly in the Stirling Range, although snow has been recorded as far north as the Perth hills.

Parts of the Great Southern are expected to reach just over 10 degrees.
