A man has tested positive for COVID-19 in Tasmania's north, bringing the state's total cases to four.

In a statement, Director of Public Health Mark Veitch said the man, aged in his late teens, "arrived in Launceston from New South Wales on 16 December".

"He was tested after receiving notification from NSW Health that he had been in an exposure setting".

Dr Veitch said "there are a number of locations in Launceston visited by the man on 16 December which have been listed as exposure sites".

"This includes the Launceston Airport baggage carousel between 12.55 and 1.15pm on 16 December, JJ's City Cafe in Racecourse Crescent between 2.22 and 2.40pm on 16 December, and JB HiFi in Invermay between 2.54 and 3.14pm on 16 December.

"Public Health Services have identified and contacted close contacts aboard the man's flight and people who had checked into exposure sites through the Check-in Tas app."

The particular strain of the disease the man is infected with has not been identified.

Mystery origin of wastewater sample

Dr Veitch also said a positive wastewater test was recorded from a sample taken from Norwood in Launceston.

He said Public Health Services was "not currently aware of any cases of COVID-19 in that area".

Authorities are urging anyone in the Norwood area who may experience any COVID-19 symptoms, regardless of how mild, to get tested immediately.

The new case brings the total number of infections in Tasmania to four, following the state's reopening to travellers on December 15.
