Four years on, death of Ludhiana jail inmate turned out to be suicide; FIR lodged

LUDHIANA: Four years after mysterious custodial death of an inmate of Ludhiana Central Jail, the judicial probe found it to be a suicide case following which the Division number 7 police registered a case for abetment to suicide against unidentified accused.

The probe revealed that the inmate had consumed a poisonous substance which led to his death. The incident is also raising questions over the security arrangements of Ludhiana Jail as how poison reached inside the jail.

The inmate Gursewak Singh, of village Sidhwan Kalan, Jagraon, was arrested by Jagraon police on June 25, 2019 for drug peddling. Three days after his arrest on June 28, 2019 he fell ill in the jail. He was rushed to the Ludhiana civil hospital; however there, the doctors referred him to Rajindra Hospital in Patiala, sensing his critical condition. Gursewak died while undergoing treatment on June 30, 2019.

Following the incident, a judicial inquiry was marked which was conducted by the Judicial Magistrate Indu Bala of Patiala. In her report, Magistrate Bala confirmed that the inmate had died from poisoning.

Sub Inspector Janak Raj, in-charge Tajpur Road police post said that the police lodged an FIR under sections 306 (abetment to suicide) against unidentified accused on the complaint of Kamaljit Singh, the Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Human Rights, Chandigarh. Further, the police probe will found the reason behind the suicide.
