A four-year-old British boy has reportedly died after falling into a swimming pool in Spain.

The youngster is understood to have been on holiday in the La Axarquia region of the country - around a 50-minute drive north-east of Malaga on the Costa del Sol - when tragedy struck.

Police were called to the village of La Vinuela at around 10am on Thursday morning after receiving a 999 call,  the Mirror reports .

Paramedics and an air ambulance were also scrambled, but despite their best efforts the child could not be saved.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Reports suggest the tragic incident happened at the home of the boy's expat grandfather.

It comes just days after a five-year-old boy from south Wales died in a swimming pool in Kos, Greece.

Theo Treharne-Jones, from Cefn Coed, near Merthyr Tydfil, passed away on Saturday morning.

The youngster is believed to have wandered off from a group of 10 before breakfasted and went into the unattended pool.
