Four Wishaw pupils are helping to tackle climate change one step at a time

A group of pupils at Cambusnethan Primary are fighting to combat climate change.

Four primary six children are actively trying to do their bit to help stop the climate crisis.

Millie Costello, Isla Robertson, Leah Boyd and Hayden O’Neill all came up with the idea themselves.

They became aware of the issues surrounding the planet after learning about deforestation in school.

Leah said: “We learned lots of interesting things when looking at deforestation and it made us want to try and help stop it.

“We learned facts like every 20 minutes, 20 football field sized areas of forest are chopped down or destroyed.

“We only have one Earth, and we want to help look after it.”

They came forward to their teacher, Adrienne Dickson, and asked if they could do something in the school to try and make a difference.

Adrienne was only happy to oblige, and helped the four kids organise a number of school assemblies.

They enlisted the help of their classmates and wrote their own scripts, designed their own posters and even sang a song.

They have been further learning about the impacts of pollution and other things that negatively affect the planet.

Hayden said: “We want to show people how it affects everyone.”

Their teacher, Mrs Dickson said: “All the work for the assemblies, posters and everything else was all done by the pupils.

“They are very passionate about the project and really do want to make a difference.”
