Four Welsh pubs set to be sold off because of multi-billion merger deal

Four Welsh pubs look set to be forcibly being sold off because of a multi-billion pound merger between two huge groups.

Stonegate Pub Company - which owns the Slug and Lettuce and Yates brands - is planning a takeover of Ei Group in a deal worth £3bn.

If it goes ahead, it would see Stonegate become the UK's biggest pub company with more than 5,000 sites compared to it's current roster of 760.

However, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) said the deal could impact 51 areas where pub-goers would face reduced choice and could face price increases or lower quality service.

To try and get the deal done, Stonegate has now proposed a list of 42 pubs to potentially sell - which include three pubs in Caerphilly and one in Bedwas, to help solve the watchdog's concerns.

The pubs proposed for sale are:

Station Inn, Caerphilly

Caerphilly Cwtch, Caerphilly

Masons Arms, Caerphilly

Fishermans Rest, Bedwas

In its decision the CMA said: "The CMA is of the view that the 42 pubs [listed] are saleable and address the competition concerns in the 51 local areas."

The watchdog has until February 19 to decided whether to officially accept the proposals, but they have been accepted "in principle".

The deadline can be extended to 17 April 2020.

The CMA published their full decision on Thursday .

What the sale would mean for jobs, pay and conditions at the affected pubs remains unclear at this stage

Both Stonegate and Ei Group declined to comment.
