Four things spotted in Manchester United training as midfield hint given

Manchester United stepped up their preparations for the return of the Premier League after holding a training match at Old Trafford on Saturday.

The match was played behind closed doors and pitted two teams from United's squad against each other as United prepare for their return to competitive action against Tottenham on June 19.

United haven't played a match since March 12 due to the coronavirus-enfored suspension of football and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be hoping to get his players as fit as possible ahead of the restart.

Prior to the game United's stars took part in some warm-up drills and United released a short highlights package on Monday.

Here are four things we spotted...

Floating roles for McTominay and Fred

In a pre-match rondo as the players got ready for their first Old Trafford run-out in months, midfield duo Scott McTominay and Fred were deployed as the floaters.

In small-sided games, floaters only play for the team that is in possession. The idea behind this is that the central midfielders are likely to have more of the ball than most other players when the match gets underway, so it makes sense for them to sharpen up on their passing as much as possible.

While only a simple exercise, this does hint that Solskjaer might see Fred and McTominay as a possible midfield pairing when the season gets back underway.

Bad sign for Pereira

Instead of wearing their usual squad numbers during the practice match, both starting XIs were numbered up from 1-11.

However, in a pre-match drill Andreas Pereira was spotted wearing his usual No.15, indicating that he didn't start the match and suggesting that the Brazilian isn't even considered a part of Solskjaer's second-choice XI.

The 24-year-old is contracted to United until 2023, with an option for a further year, but he is set to play a peripheral role for the foreseeable future.

Shooting practice for the midfielders

A shooting drill at the end of the video seemed to be exclusively set up for midfielders, with Pereira, Fred, Fernandes, McTominay and Juan Mata all taking part.

Only forwards Marcus Rashford, Mason Greenwood and Anthony Martial have double figures for the club this season, having scored 47 goals between them.

Meanwhile, United's midfielders have managed just 16 goals collectively, with McTominay getting the most with five.

Fernandes has already proved how important goals from midfield can be with three in his first nine games and Solskjaer will want to the rest of his midfielders to step up.

Fernandes wears No.10

He was only wearing the number because he was on the opposing side to Rashford who usually wears it, but the No.10 is perhaps a number better suited to Fernandes.

David Beckham wore the No.10 for a couple of seasons during his time at United before settling into the iconic No.7 jersey, and that is a number that could be available for Rashford to move into at some point in the near future, with its current occupant, Alexis Sanchez, facing a bleak future at United.

If Rashford goes on to take the No.7 in future, the No.10 could have Fernandes' name on it, quite literally.
