Four things spotted in Manchester United training as Angel Gomes scores a screamer

With just two weeks to go until the Premier League is back, Manchester United are continuing their preparations in training.

United haven't played a game since they smashed five past LASK in the first leg of their Europa League last-16 tie on March 12 but are stepping up the training this week ahead of their match with Jose Mourinho's Tottenham.

United released a highlights package from Tuesday's training session in which the goalkeepers were put through their paces and the outfielders worked in the gym and on their shooting.

Here are four things we spotted from Carrington...

Gym work is vital

While it's been vital for the players to get back on the pitch and start kicking the ball again after such a long break, the importance of proper gym work hasn't been overlooked.

The Bundesliga has been back for a few weeks now and there has been a sharp rise in muscle injuries and fatigue with players coming back into action after a two-month lay off.

Players in England have had an even longer break and are set to have an even more intense match schedule, so United are doing everything they can to mitigate those inevitable injuries is a good sign.

De Gea hasn't missed a step

While there are justified fears that some players may have lost a degree of form after so long without playing, it appears that David de Gea hasn't in the slightest.

Though training drills can never replicate a real match scenario, the Spaniard made some stunning saves during the session, including one from Bruno Fernandes.

He has had his rough patches of form over the last two years but De Gea remains an elite-level goalkeeper.

He did concede some though...

Even the best goalkeeper in the world can't keep them all out and some balls did manage to find the back of De Gea's net.

Fellow countryman Juan Mata was the first to hit home in the clip as he bent one around De Gea who was rooted to the spot.

That was followed with a goal from the surprise source or Eric Bailly. The centre-back isn't known for his ability on the ball but in this instance he delicately curled a shot into the top corner.

Gomes scores a screamer

There remains plenty of uncertainty around the future of talented teen Angel Gomes, but he gave a reminder to the decision makers at the club of his lofty potential.

The attacking midfielder picked up the ball on the half-way line of the 7-a-side pitch before turning and lashing the ball into the top corner in nonchalant fashion.

Gomes has struggled for minutes this season and with his contract set to expire this summer a departure could be on the cards, with Chelsea and Barcelona said to be interested.

The MEN understands Gomes has doubts over a possible pathway to United's first team and that is a big reason why he is stalling on a new contract.
