A number of English eyebrows were raised when they saw Jack Grealish on the bench with Mason Mount instead given the creative reigns for Gareth Southgate's side.
These worries were quickly quashed as the 22-year-old produced a solid all-around display during The Three Lions 1-0 victory over Croatia.
Chelsea's midfield maestro won two tackles, as well as registering one interception and one key pass, proving Southgate was right for including him in the starting lineup and earning him praise from former manager Frank Lampard as well.
Chilwell omission
Chelsea and Manchester United fans have been arguing over who should start at left-back for Southgate's team, the Blues' faithful wanted Ben Chilwell in the team, while supporters of the Red Devils argued Luke Shaw deserved a spot instead.
However, the English boss opted for Atletico Madrid defender Kieran Trippier, an unusual decision given he is typically a right-back.
Southgate also decided to leave Chilwell out of the squad entirely, picking Shaw on the bench over Chelsea's fullback.
The former Leicester man will be disappointed with being left out of the squad, especially considering his fine end of season form.
Kane's struggles
Reported Chelsea target Harry Kane struggled to get into the game, failing to register a single shot on target before he was subbed off in the 82nd minute.
The Tottenham striker missed a huge chance to make it 2-0 late on after a brilliant cross from Mason Mount found Kane at the back post.
Kane was often seen dropping deep in an attempt to get into the game but registered just ten accurate passes before he was replaced by Jude Bellingham late on.
Kovacic takes Mount out
Chelsea teammates Mateo Kovacic and Mason Mount faced off against each other in an exciting midfield battle at Wembley.
Eventually, it was the Englishman who reigned victorious, outperforming the tricky Croatian playmaker, who was eventually subbed after failing to get into the game.
However, before he was taken off Kovacic produced a nasty challenge on Mount, earning a yellow card early in the second half for a crunching challenge after overrunning the ball.
