Four taken to hospital after car crashes into tree on Gateshead roundabout

Four people have been taken to hospital after a serious crash on a Gateshead roundabout.

The roundabout at the old Swallow Hotel, between Old Durham Road and High West Street, was closed after a car left the road and hit a tree.

The North East Ambulance Service say they were called to a collision involving two vehicles and took four injured people to hospital.

The crash happened just before 8.30am on Saturday and the roundabout was closed for four hours.

A doctor, believed to be a passer-by, helped at the scene immediately after the crash before six ambulance crews arrived.

Two people were taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) in Newcastle and two others were taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Gateshead.

Officers were carrying out a collision investigation and could be seen putting markers on the grass verge and taking photographs of the crash scene.
