Four Swansea pubs and clubs closed for breaching social distancing measures

Four more Swansea-based licensed businesses have been forced to close temporarily after failing to make their premises safe for customers.

The Three Compasses Inn in Clydach, and the West End AFC Sports and Social Club in Townhill, along with The Joiners in Bishopston, and The Boss Brewery Bar in Landore, have all been issued with closure notices.

It follows visits by both Swansea Council and police licensing officers. All four business have had to close immediately for two weeks so the owners can make improvements to their premises.

They have until Monday, October 26, to implement measures before they can re-open.

Improvements include the introduction of measures to control entrances and exits, toilet facilities, ensure the layout of the business enables two metre social distancing between persons who do not live together, and to ensure staff are wearing suitable protective gear.

David Hopkins, Swansea Council cabinet member for delivery and operations, said: “Our own licensing officers are continuing to work closely with police to act on information received and follow up concerns raised by the public where businesses appear to be ignoring important regulations introduced to protect the public against coronavirus and assist in stopping the spread of the disease.

“Large numbers of businesses are putting measures in place to help us with this fight against the ongoing pandemic.

“Unfortunately some are continuing to ignore these new rules and are putting people’s lives at risk.

“The businesses recently closed will now need to demonstrate they have put in place specific measures so that customers can visit those places safely.”

The closure notice to The Three Compasses comes after council officers visited the premises in Hebron Road in July, due to an alleged breach of lockdown rules.

Swansea Council said officers went to the business to offer advice to managers following a visit by police investigating the alleged breach of lockdown rules.

In addition, three Swansea stores have been issued with improvement notices; The Asia Market in St Helen’s Road, Swansea Market in St Helen’s Road, and Budget Booze in Woodfield Street in Morriston.

Improvement notices are issued to businesses instructing them to make changes to their social distancing measures, but do not mean the business has to close in the meantime.

They are given up to 72 hours to address issues on the notices. Each of the three shop improvement notices were issued on October 9.
