Four Shot, One Dead In NYC Scooter Drive-By Shooting

Knife found at the scene after a man, who was later shot dead by police, killed four members of his extended family in Queens

Authorities in New York City reported a tragic incident on Tuesday evening where four individuals were shot by gunmen riding on scooters, resulting in one fatality and three injuries. The shooting took place in the Bronx on a street corner after 6 p.m., as two scooters approached the intersection. Each scooter carried two male suspects, with passengers on the back opening fire and discharging approximately 10 shots in total.

Three victims, aged between 23 and 37, sustained gunshot wounds to their legs, while a 29-year-old man was tragically struck in the chest and legs, succumbing to his injuries. The perpetrators, masked and hooded to conceal their identities, quickly fled northbound on the scooters following the attack.

Assistant Police Chief Benjamin Gurley mentioned that one suspect is in custody, although investigators are still determining their direct involvement in the incident. The motive behind the shooting remains under investigation, with authorities exploring whether the victims were targeted or if the incident was gang-related.

Deputy Police Commissioner Kaz Daughtry highlighted the efforts of the Community Response Team, which has been actively combating criminal activities involving scooters in the Bronx since April 1. The team forms part of a broader initiative to address crime involving smaller vehicles, with over 9,500 scooters, dirt bikes, and ATVs removed from the streets since the beginning of the year, including 2,500 in the Bronx alone.

This tragic event in the Bronx follows the recent loss of two officers, Police officer Michael Jensen from the Syracuse Police Department and Lieutenant Michael Hoosock from the Onondaga Sheriff's Office, who were both fatally shot during a vehicle pursuit of a suspect on April 14.
