Four Scottish cities announced as hosts for festival celebrating Catalan films

FOUR Scottish cities have been announced to host this year's Catalan Film Festival, giving Scots the opportunity to celebrate the very best “vibrant creativity” taking place across the region's cinema landscape.

This year’s Catalan Film Festival programme aims to offer an “intimate and contemporary” exploration of themes including family relationships, memory, and personal transformation and will be held across Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dundee and Inverness.

Running from March 8 to 31, the festival, which is in its tenth year, will offer more than 15 titles which will be screened along with five guest talks and a variety of workshops.

Some of the feature films included in this year’s lineup include the comedy A House On Fire by director Dani de la Orden, along with the musical drama They Will Be Dust by director Carlos Marques-Marcet and Pilar Palomero’s Glimmer.

There shall also be a selection of short films on offer including Bona nit rambles, Els buits and El bon auguri along with a talk event with filmmaker Alba Bresolí best known for El día que volaron la montaña, Die Entzweite Insel and Burning Body.

A spokesperson for CinemaAttic, one of Scotland’s key players in the film exhibition scene, said the films chosen for this year’s Catalan Film Festival each possess “emotionally rich and intricate narratives”.

They said: “This is one of the strongest programmes of award-winning Catalan films we have ever brought to Scotland, with a selection of films ranging from satire and comedy to thriller and psychological horror.

“From the subtle mastery of realism to the bold, extravagant spectacle of a musical that blends exceptional songs, storytelling, design, performance, and dance, the tenth Catalan Film Festival has something for everyone

“Our festival spotlights cinema as a transformative medium, and cinema as a shelter. The programme this year is full of beauty and horror, light and darkness, and of course a pure love for film. Smiles, laughs, and tears are guaranteed.”

There will also be several guests at this year’s festival, including director and screenwriter Pilar Palomero whose debut feature Schoolgirls was a big winner at the 2021 Goya Awards.

Barcelona-based screenwriter and film director Mar Coll who won the Goya and Gaudí Awards for Best Director for her first feature, Tres dies amb la familía will also be taking part in the festival, along with film director and programmer Bresolí.
