Four pupils catch coronavirus at Bristol school - year group sent home

Almost 200 pupils in one year group have been told to self-isolate at home after four of their year tested positive for coronavirus in the space of just a few days.

The mini-outbreak is among Year 7 pupils at Ashton Park School, an 11-18 age secondary school in Bower Ashton, in the grounds of the Ashton Court Estate on the very edge of Bristol.

Headteacher Nick John told parents earlier this week all Year 7 pupils had to stay in their homes for two weeks - and would not be able to return to school until Wednesday, December 9, on advice from Public Health England.

He said on Tuesday another two pupils in Year 7 had tested positive in the previous 24 hours, to add to two previous positive cases in the days before, and Year 7's bubble would have to go home.

"In the last 24 hours there have been an additional two positive cases of Covid-19 within Year 7, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to four during the last week," he wrote.

"After discussion with Public Health England, we will now be closing the Year 7 bubble for two weeks to minimise any further spread. Year 7 will reopen to students on Wednesday, December 9 and full home learning will be provided until their return," he added.

Ashton Park School's pupils mainly come from the south west corner of Bristol, from Hotwells and Ashton, as well as from Bedminster, Southville, Bedminster Down and Ashton Vale.

These are some of the areas which have seen the highest rates of coronavirus in the country - particularly in Bedminster Down, although case numbers are now falling locally.

At the start of November, the school brought in mandatory wearing of face masks in communal spaces like corridors.
