Four previous Greater Manchester hotspots have now managed to 'suppress' coronavirus

Four areas of Trafford have managed to ‘suppress’ coronavirus.

According to data on the government’s interactive Covid-19 tracking map, the areas – all in the south of the borough – had fewer than three new cases confirmed in the week ending February 24.

In the government’s own words, it means the areas have ‘suppressed’ the virus – as things stand.

The wards – Hale, Hale Barns, Bowdon and Timperley South – were all previously ‘hotspots’ for the virus.

Coun Nathan Evans, Conservative representative for Timperley, said: “It’s quite incredible, what an achievement.

“Hats off to the people of Timperley for following lockdown rules rules and keeping it under control.

“It’s amazing. The people of Timperley have been fantastic, and it is down to the people. It shows what can be done if you follow the rules.

“I just hope that good news spreads across Trafford and the whole of Greater Manchester. Superb.”

There are two other Trafford areas close to doing the same – Sale Central and Sale East – with five and four confirmed cases in the same period.

Sale Central has an infection rate of just 49 cases per 100,00 and Sale East 47.7 per 100,000.

The exact data is not shown on the map when numbers are low – to protect individuals’ identities, the government says.

Every area in Trafford now has an infection rates below 300 per 100,000 – for the first time since the second lockdown last year.

The area with the highest infection rate in the borough is Partington – 279.9 per 100,000 population.

Last week, the borough’s director for public health Eleanor Roaf warned that the decline in infection rates has stalled across the borough – and that case numbers could go up when schools returned.
