Four players to improve Chelsea and the timely £50m windfall to boost Lampard's transfer plans

Here are the Chelsea morning digest for Tuesday, May 19.

Frank Lampard’s £50m windfall

The Chelsea career of Alvaro Morata is one with bright spells, but ultimately a disappointment. The Spanish striker was never able to look entirely convincing, and he was quietly bussed back to Madrid via a loan deal to Atletico.

That disappointment will be replaced by excitement this summer, however, as Oliver Harbord writes.

The Chelsea striker has an obligation to buy clause in his contract with Atletico, and it will net the club a healthy sum, believed to be almost £50million.

That will be a timely boost for Frank Lampard as he prepares for his first summer transfer window in charge of the Blues.

Hakim Ziyech reveals a major reason for joining Chelsea

Hakim Ziyech has cited Frank Lampard’s philosophy as crucial behind his decision to join Chelsea.

The Ajax star will move to Stamford Bridge on July 1 and will cost the club £33.4million.

The deal for Ziyech was agreed in mid-February, and the 27-year-old has explained that Lampard’s attacking football suits his style, and was a major factor behind his decision to join the club.

"Chelsea is a beautiful club, a huge club,” Ziyech told NOS. "The football that they play attracts me, and the manager wants to play attacking football.

"And just like here [Ajax], they like to use the talent that walks around in their club now.”

Four players who can boost Chelsea’s squad and save Roman Abramovich millions

Chelsea are set for an important summer transfer window.

The club’s ban from 12 months ago is no more, and in theory it will allow Frank Lampard greater freedom in the market.

At the same time, the emergence of the coronavirus means that clubs across the continent will be adapting their spending plans, and Chelsea may be no different.

Adam Newson has identified four players that could aid Chelsea’s cause, without costing Roman Abramovich millions in transfer fees.

A Belgian attacker, a Scottish midfielder, a Belgian defender and a French prospect make-up Adam’s quartet, and you can read more about them, and his reasoning, here.
