Four people taken to hospital after a van and tram collided in Wythenshawe

Four people have been taken to hospital after a van and a tram collided in Wythenshawe.

A man, thought to be the van driver, suffered serious head injuries following the smash which took place on Hollyhedge Road last night.

The ambulance service said three other patients were taken to hospital.

Their injuries are not believed to be as serious.

Emergency services scrambled to reports of a collision involving the two vehicles just after 8.30pm on Thursday.

It took place near to the pedestrian crossing on Hollyhedge Road, near to the Martinscroft tram stop.

A man in the van could be seen bloodied in the aftermath of the incident.

Other images showed the silver van completely wedged by the side of the Metrolink.

The ambulance service said a man, aged in his early 30s, suffered 'major trauma' head injuries.

Police sealed off Hollyhedge Road for a short period of time last night, but it has since re-opened.

Metrolink services on the Manchester Airport line were also suspended while recovery of the damaged van took place.

Firefighters also attended the scene after being called to reports of a van embedded into the side of a tram.

All passengers on the tram had got off by the time fire crews arrived.

A spokeswoman for the North West Ambulance Service said: "We were called at 8.31pm.

"Four people have been taken to hospital. One of them is a major trauma patient - a man in his early 30s."

A Greater Manchester Police spokeswoman confirmed they were called to reports of a collision involving a tram and a van at 8.35pm.
