Four people including a one-year-old baby and another child, aged three, have died in a fire in Barcelona.

The blaze broke out about 6am on Tuesday in a building in the city’s Tetuan square. Four survivors are being treated for smoke inhalation.

Local reports say squatters were living in some of the flats in the block affected by the fire.

A spokesman for Barcelona firefighters said: “We regrettably confirm the deaths of four people, two of whom were minors, in a fire at a property in Tetuan Square.

“Four people have been treated for smoke inhalation. The blaze has been put out.”

Initial reports another five people were trapped inside were refuted by Barcelona City Hall.

It is not yet clear if the four who died were members of the same family.
