Four people interviewed as suspects by regional crime unit in Wellness Village alleged bribery investigation

Four people have been interviewed as suspects in an ongoing investigation by the regional crime unit into alleged bribery offences linked to the controversial Wellness and Life Science Village project.

In August the regional crime unit for southern Wales, Tarian, searched eight addresses in Swansea, Camarthenshire and Kent.

The investigation centres around the tendering process for the Wellness Village project planned for Llanelli.

Now in an investigation update statement the police said: "Tarian, the Regional Organised Crime Unit (ROCU) for southern Wales, is continuing to investigate alleged offences following a complaint by Swansea University in respect of the Llanelli Wellbeing and Life Sciences Village.

"Four people have been interviewed as suspects, all of whom remain under investigation. Further enquiries as part of this complex investigation are ongoing.

"Extensive examination of a significant number of documents and electronic equipment, which were seized earlier this year, also continues."

In 2018, Carmarthenshire Council launched a procurement process to find a development partner to help build the £200m project, also known as Delta Lakes, which was seeking £40m in backing from the City Deal for the Swansea Bay City Region.

A company Sterling Health Security Holdings was appointed as the project's development partner, after coming through a EU tendering process in which it was the only bidder.

Previously, Carmarthenshire Council had had a 10-month exclusivity deal with a company called Kent Neurosciences to develop the business case for the project.

Carmarthenshire Council ended its partnership with Sterling in December last year. Swansea University also ended its involvement in the project following senior suspensions at the university.

A new funding and business model for a wellness village is being developed.
