Four people, including two politicians, to be prosecuted over Golfgate

Two politicians are set to be prosecuted over Golfgate.

President of the Oireachtas Golf Society, Independent TD Noel Grealish, and society chairman, former Fianna Fáil TD, Donie Cassidy, will face charges for their role in organising the infamous dinner.

There are four in total being prosecuted, although the other two are not politicians or public figures.

A conviction carries a penalty of up to six months in prison or fines of as much as €2,500.

The dinner in the Station House in Clifden last August saw 81 people gather after an Oireachtas golf society day out in Connemara Golf Club.

However, it came the day after the Government had reintroduced stricter Covid rules and politicians told us large gatherings like this were out of bounds.

The fallout from the scandal saw Minister for Agriculture, Dara Calleary, and EU Commissioner, Phil Hogan, fall on their swords and lose their jobs.

A spokesman for An Garda Síochána confirmed the case is proceeding.

He said: “An Garda Síochána has received directions from the DPP in relation to the prosecution of four individuals for organising an event in contravention of health regulations at a commercial premises in Galway in August 2020.

“Summons have been lodged with the Courts and District Court dates in relation to each of the individuals are awaited.

“An Garda Síochána will not be commenting further."
