Four people including two children hurt after crash on A1 in Belford

Four people, including two children, have been hurt after a serious crash on the A1 in Northumberland.

The collision took place on the northbound carriageway of the A1 in Belford at around 6.15pm on Sunday.

The road was closed while emergency services made their way to the scene and helped the casualties. It is not likely to reopen until the early hours of Monday.

The North East Ambulance Service said four people were taken to hospital.

A spokesperson added: "We were called at 6.15pm to a four-vehicle road traffic collision on the A1 at Belford.

"There have been a number of casualties, with some trapped.

“A woman has been airlifted to the RVI in Newcastle with chest and abdominal injuries. A man with pelvic injuries, along with two children who were also injured, are being taken by road to the RVI."

The spokesperson said a large number of resources were sent to the scene. These included two air ambulances, four double-crewed ambulances and a Hazardous Area Response Team.

In addition, an off-duty doctor was also there as well as two clinical care managers, one of whom was in the area after coming across the incident.

Both the northbound and southbound carriageways remain closed and diversions are in place.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: "We are dealing with a serious road traffic collision. We expect the road to be closed for up to six hours.

"We still have inquiries ongoing."
