Four people hospitalised after two cars 'crash into cow' on Co Clare road

Four people have been hospitalised after a serious road crash in Co Clare.

Emergency services rushed to the scene of a crash that involved two cars on the N18 near junction 5 at Cratloe at around 11pm on Tuesday.

The road was closed from the junction 5 flyover and traffic diverted away from the area while emergency service dealt with the incident.

It was reopened at around 2am on Wednesday morning.

The occupants of the vehicles, two men and two women, were taken to hospital in Limerick where they were treated for their injuries. The cow died on the scene.

A garda spokesman said: "Gardaí attended a road traffic incident on the N18, Cratloe, shortly after 11pm last night. Two cars are understood to have collided with a cow.

"Two males in their 40s and two females, one in their 40s and the other in their 30s were taken to University Hospital Limerick to be treated for their injuries.

"The animal died at the scene from its injuries and was removed from the area by animal collection services.
