Five people hit by car in Melbourne

The cars collided on William Street near the La Trobe Street intersection.

Five pedestrians, including two children, have been hit by a car and injured in a two-car collision in Melbourne's CBD.

The cars collided on William Street near the La Trobe Street intersection at about 3:45pm in what police are treating as an accidental crash.

Police said one of the cars lost control and struck the pedestrians, leaving a man aged in his 30s in a serious condition with leg injuries.

Two women, also in their 30s, were in a stable condition with leg, back and chest injuries.

A pre-school-aged girl is in a stable condition with grazes, while another child is believed to have suffered minor injuries.

Acting Senior Sergeant Mark Kelly said no-one in vehicles sustained any injuries.

The exact cause of the collision is being investigated and the drivers of both vehicles are assisting police with their enquiries.

Sergeant Kelly said the driver was in shock but stopped and cooperated with police.

"It appears that a vehicle has proceeded through the red lights," he said.

"As a result, this vehicle has collided with several other vehicles and subsequently several bystanders have been injured, with five being taken to hospital with moderate injuries, no life-threatening injuries.

"The scene was chaotic, but it was well managed by all the emergency services."
