Four Newport schools confirm coronavirus cases in one day

Four Newport secondary schools confirmed the news of positive coronavirus cases among pupils on Sunday, December 6, meaning that students from affected year groups must now self-isolate.

The schools - Llanwern High School, The John Frost School, St. Joseph's RC School and St. Julian's School - each confirmed the news in a letter to parents, with students from 10 year groups in total being instructed to self-isolate.

The John Frost School confirmed in three separate letters to parents on Sunday that the school had been notified of positive Covid-19 cases in Years 7, 11 and 13.

All students in these year groups have been instructed to self-isolate for 14 days and will be able to return to school on December 18.

On the same day, St. Julian's School confirmed that the school had been notified of positive Covid-19 cases in Year 10 and in its Post-16 group.

Year 10 students at the school have been instructed to self-isolate for 14 days from the day the student was last in school, which was Friday, December 4. This means that Year 10 students will not be able to return to school until after the Christmas holidays, on January 5.

Students in Post-16 (Years 12 and 13) have been asked to self-isolate for 14 days from Thursday, December 3, and must remain at home until December 17.

Unlike Year 10 students, Post-16 students will be able to return to school in 2020, on Friday, December 18.

Llanwern High School also confirmed positive cases of coronavirus in two year groups on Sunday - in Years 9 and 11.

All students in both year groups have been asked to self-isolate for 14 days until December 18, and will not be able to return to school until January 4.
