Four new Covid deaths confirmed by Nicola Sturgeon as cases rise by 2,802 overnight

Four new coronavirus deaths have been reported in Scotland with 2,802 new positive cases confirmed in the last 24 hours.

Nicola Sturgeon announced the latest figures this afternoon which reveal 401 people are currently in hospital with 38 in intensive care units, four more than yesterday.

A total of 306,449 Scots have now caught coronavirus since the start of the pandemic with 7,744 deaths recorded.

The new stats also reveal 3,900,864 people have now had their first dose of the vaccine while 2,825,886 have been doubled jabbed.

The news comes as Nicola Sturgeon gives a statement with an update on Scotlands map for lockdown easing.

The First Minister was asked by the BBC if dates of Scotland exiting lockdown were set in stone.

She said: "Nothing against a global pandemic of an infectious virus that has got more infectious and transmissible with the Delta variant can be set in stone.

"I want as much as everybody does the certainty of 'by this date we will be free of everything and there will no longer be any restrictions'.

"Every part of me wants that and every part of me believes we are on a journey towards that and heading in that direction.

"To set dates in stone while we still face that virus would not in my view be responsible. My job is to take hard decisions that get us as safely as possible to that end point."
