Four million dodgy cigarettes seized in Glasgow warehouse customs raid

More than four million dodgy cigarettes have been seized at a Glasgow warehouse.

Three men have also been charged following the customs crackdown, which also uncovered an illegal tobacco factory in Hamilton.

HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) revealed today that two industrial mixing machines, 45kg of tobacco and packaging were found at the Lanarkshire site.

And they say lost duty and tax on the illicit haul is estimated to be around £1.6million.

More than 50 customs and police officers carried out the raids on Thursday, £20,000 in cash was also recovered.

Three Airdrie men aged between 25 and 34 have been charged with excise duty fraud and money laundering offences.

The massive haul was uncovered by customs and cops (HMRC)

Joe Hendry is the assistant director of the Fraud Investigation Service at HMRC.

He said: “This is another example of the combined powers our partners at the Scottish Crime Campus and Serious Organised Crime Taskforce have to disrupt, detect and deter the illicit trade of tobacco and other forms of criminality.

“Tackling criminal trade is at the heart of our strategy to clampdown on the illicit tobacco market, which costs the UK around £1.9 billion a year. This is theft from the taxpayer and undermines legitimate traders."

A report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal and the three men have been released pending further investigation.
