Four mile stretch of road closed due to dumped asbestos has now reopened

A four-mile stretch of road which has been closed for almost a week has now been reopened after a large amount of asbestos was dumped.

A significant number of bags filled with asbestos were dumped along the grass verge of Ollerton Road last Friday.

Bassetlaw District Council took the decision to close the road and  issued a warning to residents after the 'extremely dangerous' incident.

The road was closed from the top of Sparken Hill in Worksop to the junction of Netherfield Lane near Budby.

The council said the bags had been thrown from "a moving vehicle travelling out of Worksop" and because the bags had come "into contact with the ground, some of them burst open."

The local authority said it will cost thousands of pounds to clear up the area and appealed to the public to pass any information about the incident to them.

A spokesman for the council said: "Our contractors have now completed the clean up operation and the B6034 Ollerton Road has now been reopened.

"We would like to thank everybody for their patience and understanding over the last six days as we appreciate this has been an inconvenience for residents, businesses and visitors."
