Four midfielders Arsenal can sign on the cheap in the January transfer window

The January transfer window is not normally a period where Arsenal do a lot of business.

The club will point to the failed loan spell for Denis Suarez last January as a reason to urge caution during the winter transfer window.

Suarez was the only player the Gunners brought in, securing him on a five-month loan deal from Barcelona, but he made only six appearances, none of them as a starter.

But with the Arsenal hierarchy dispensing with Unai Emery's services last week and Freddie Ljungberg sitting in the hotseat on a temporary basis, could the board be convinced to make some January moves this time around to strengthen the squad?

The Gunners did not have much to spend in the summer, although they did break their transfer record to snare Nicolas Pepe for £72million, however that was split over a number of different payments.

The central midfield area could be a position that requires strengthening, given the question marks over Lucas Torreira and Granit Xhaka's futures at the club.

And there are a number of players whose contracts run out next summer that would be available on the cheap in Janaury.

Here we take a look at who Arsenal could snare on a cut-price deal.

Blaise Matuidi

France midfielder Matuidi spent six years with Paris Saint-Germain before moving to Juventus in Serie A in 2017.

The tough-tackling midfielder signed a three-year deal with Juve and that contract is coming to an end next summer.

There is speculation that the Italian side will look to renew his deal, although there has been nothing confirmed on that front yet, meaning he can talk to foreign clubs in January about a free transfer in the summer.

Goal report that the French midfielder is expected to be handed a new deal, although there are no guarantees he will sign it, but former Liverpool midfielder Emre Can is unlikely to remain at the club beyond next summer, having been left out of the Champions League squad and fallen further down the midfield pecking order.

Luka Modric

Last year's Ballon d'Or winner has enjoyed a stell;ar career with Tottenham and now Real Madrid.

Would his Spurs background stop him marriving at the Emirates, though?

According to OKdiario, Modric could join Inter Miami ahead of the side’s MLS debut season starting in March 2020. However, the US side could face competition for Modric’s signature from their Serie A namesake in Inter Milan.

There is no suggestion that Real Madrid will look to extend his contract, with the Croatian turning 35 next summer and he could have a year or two left in his legs should Arsenal want to make a stunning move.

Nemanja Matic

Serbian midfielder has fallen out of favour at Manchester United this season.

But would Arsenal be better positioned to making a move for the 31-year-old?

He is out of contract at Old Trafford in the summer, so is another who would be available on a cheaper deal in January.

Giacomo Bonaventura

The one name on the list that may not be familiar to all Arsenal fans.

Started the season on the bench at the San Siro, before suffering with a thigh injury. Has started each of the last two games for Milan and scored during the 1-1 draw with Napoli.

At 30 years old he is the youngest of the four players on this list whose contract runs out in the summer.
