Four men to be hanged in India over Delhi gang rape and murder

Four men who were convicted of raping and murdering a woman on a bus will be hanged in India.

Jyoti Singh, 23, and her male friend were lured onto a private bus in New Delhi in the horrific 2012 attack.

The men repeatedly raped and tortured her with a metal bar before beating both victims and dumping them naked and semi-conscious on the roadside, The Mirror reports .

Jyoti, a physiotherapy student, died in hospital weeks later.

The four attackers were convicted of murder, gang rape and torture in September 2013.

Bus cleaner Akshay Thakur Singh, Mukesh Singh, 32, fruit seller Pawan Gupta, 25, and gym instructor Vinay Sharma, 26, were all sentenced to death.

The date of their execution by hanging has now been scheduled for January 22 at 7am local time, according to  India Today .

Six men who were on the bus, including the driver, were originally arrested following the incident.

One suspect died in hospital in a suspected suicide and another, a juvenile, was convicted of rape and murder and given a three year jail term.

The case sent shockwaves around the world, and sparked mass protests that saw outraged locals clash with security forces across India.

Women who fear for their safety amid widespread sexual violence took to the streets to demand change.

Jyoti, who was not named by the press in India, came to be known as Nirbhaya, a Hindi word meaning 'fearless'.
