Four men shot at Muslim funeral in Canada

Four men have been shot at a Muslim cemetery near Cochrane, Alberta, following a funeral service on Friday afternoon.

All four were taken to nearby Calgary Foothills Hospital though police stated that their injuries were not life threatening.

Zouheir Osman, who is in charge of the cemetery, said that a funeral for a 21-year-old man had taken place on site just before the shooting.

Police say a group of family and friends who had attended the funeral remained at the site following the service.

Imam Syed Soharwardy said that the shooting “did not seem to be a hate crime”, but suggested that the shootings may be gang-related.

He said: “It looks like a turf war or gang war or some type of revenge”.

Police confirmed that they did not believe the shooting to be a random incident, but may have been a result of an altercation that broke out at the end of the funeral service.

Mr Soharwardy said the funeral was for a Pakistani man named Hamza Nazir, but he did not know the cause of death.

Police reassured the public that there was no danger; however a heavily armed police team was present outside the hospital on Friday.
