Four men arrested over 'hateful' anti-Semitic abuse incidents in Salford and London bailed

Four men arrested in connection with anti-Semitic incidents in London and Salford have been bailed.

The men were arrested by Metropolitan Police following reports of people shouting anti-Semitic abuse from a car in London on Sunday afternoon (May 16).

When in custody, police also arrested them over a similar incident in the early hours of Sunday morning in Broughton Park, Salford.

The initial arrest came after a video circulating on social media showed a 'convoy' of cars with Palestinian flags on the bonnets driving through the St John's Wood area in Westminster, London.

One person was seen shouting deeply offensive and anti-Semitic language from a megaphone speaker, MyLondon reported.

Following a series of police enquiries, officers were able to track the vehicle down to the A40 in Hillingdon, west London, using a police helicopter.

After stopping the car at approximately 6.30pm, four men were arrested on suspicion of racially aggravated public order offences.

They were then taken into custody at a police station in west London.

While in custody, the men were also arrested in connection to a similar incident that took place in Broughton Park in Salford at around 1.35am on Sunday morning.

The Salford area is known for having a large Jewish community.

Yehudis Fletcher, a human rights campaigner and writer, posted details of the Salford incident on social media on Monday afternoon (May 17).

She wrote: "Last night in Broughton Park, Salford, Jewish owned cars were vandalised and over shabbos, Jews were harassed and abused by #freepalestine protestors.

"@gmpolice have been incredible."

The four men have since been released on bail.

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan tweeted on Sunday that the reports of the 'hateful, intimidating and racist' language on display were 'deeply concerning'.

He posted: "Behaviour that incites anti-Jewish or anti-Muslim hatred has no place in our city.

"The Met have my full backing for their zero-tolerance approach to tackling it."

In a statement, Metropolitan Police confirmed: "Four men were arrested on suspicion of racially aggravated public order offences.

"They were taken into custody at a west London police station.

"Whilst there, they were additionally arrested in connection with a similar incident which took place at around 01.35hrs on Sunday, 16 May in the Broughton Park area of Salford, Manchester.

"They have since been released on bail pending further enquiries in relation to both incidents."

Anyone with information is advised to contact Metropolitan Police or GMP.
