Four men appear in court charged over brutal kidnapping of Quinn executive Kevin Lunney

Four men have appeared in court charged in connection with the abduction and assault of Quinn Industrial Holdings executive Kevin Lunney.

Three men with addresses in Dublin and a fourth with an address in Co Cavan were brought to Virginia District Court amid tight security.

They were charged with assaulting Mr Lunney under Section 3 of the non-fatal Offences Against the Person Act  and the false imprisonment of the business man on September 17 under the same Act.

Section 3 assault (causing harm) carries a sentence on conviction of up to five years in jail.

False imprisonment under the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act carries a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.

Before the court were Alan O’Brien, 38, of Shelmalier Road, East Wall, Dublin, Luke O’Reilly, 66, Mullahoran Lower, Kilcogy, Co Cavan, and Darren Redmond, 25, Caledon Road, East Wall, Dublin.

A fourth man from Dublin aged 38 years was also charged. Judge McLoughlin granted a temporary order for one week banning publication of his name.

First to appear before Judge Denis McLoughlin was O’Reilly from Mullahoran Lower, Kilcogy, Co Cavan.

Wearing a blue sweater and holding a grey anorak, O’Reilly didn’t speak during the court appearance. His solicitor told the court there was no application for bail.

O’Reilly was remanded in custody to Castlerea Prison for one week to appear at Virginia District Court on December 3.

Darren Redmond of Calendon Road, East Wall Dublin and Alan O'Brien of Shelmalier Road, East Wall, Dublin separately applied for bail.

There were Garda objections to both applications. Garda witnesses said they  have fears that witnesses could be intimidated or interfered with. There was also a concern evidence could be destroyed, gardai said.

The judge refused bail to both Redmond and O'Brien and remanded both in custody to Castlerea prison  for one week to appear at the same court next Tuesday.

The fourth defendant who cannot be named did not apply for bail and will also appear with the three other defendants in the same court next Tuesday December 3.
